I'm Here for Sankai Juku's Istanbul Performance"山海塾イスタンブル公演に来ています。

I’m currently in Istanbul. The last time I was here was five years ago, after a performance in Athens, Greece, when I visited a university junior living in Istanbul.

This time, in addition to filming Sankai Juku’s performance, I’ll also be shooting an interview with Semimaru and documenting the backstage production process. This performance is hosted by the Japan Foundation.

Until now, filming performances has always meant covering the travel costs myself. I’ve had to carry my own equipment to Sankai Juku’s performance venues, shooting everything solo. While budgets usually cover dancers, lighting, sound technicians, stage managers, and other staff, there has never been funding allocated for documenting the performances. For example, when Sankai Juku performed on Réunion Island, I traveled alone, carrying a camera for 36 hours to get there.

Covering the travel expenses was a challenge. To make ends meet, I brought DVDs that my company sells and arranged to have them sold at the venue. However, securing a sales space and negotiating with the venue staff was something I had to handle on my own. There were even times when I couldn’t find anyone to assist and had to sell the DVDs myself before and after the performances.

This time, thanks to the Japan Foundation, I’ve been given the opportunity to officially film a documentary of the performance, which is why I’m now in Istanbul.

イスタンブルに来ています。前回は、ギリシャ・アテネでの公演後、イスタンブルに住む大学の後輩の自宅を訪ねたのが最後で、それ以来５年ぶりの訪問になります。

今回は、山海塾の公演撮影に加えて、蝉丸さんのインタビューや舞台制作風景も撮影する予定です。この公演は、国際交流基金が主催する山海塾公演です。

これまで、公演の撮影といえば、いつも自腹で山海塾の公演先まで機材を持ち込み、一人で撮影していました。公演の企画として、ダンサーや照明、音響、舞台監督といったスタッフには予算がありましたが、記録撮影のための予算は一度もついたことがありませんでした。例えば、レユニオン島での公演の際も、一人でカメラを持ち、36時間かけて現地に向かったこともあります。

旅費はとても負担が大きく、そこで弊社のDVDを持参し、会場で販売してもらい、その収益を旅費に充てていました。しかし、会場で売ってもらうためには、売り場の確保や売り子さんとの交渉など、すべて自分で行わなければなりませんでした。時には売り子が見つからず、公演の本番前後で自分でDVDを売ったことも何度もあります。

しかし、今回は国際交流基金様のおかげで、公演の記録映像を正式に撮影できることになり、今、こうしてイスタンブルに来ています。

今日から始まる撮影が楽しみです。
